One concept in Chapter 8 that I found useful was general claims and their contradictories. General claims declare things in a universal way about just a part of group or all of it. The contradictories of the general claims focus on words such as “all”, “some”, and “no”. The word “all” is meant for everything or can relate to every single one. The term “some” focuses on only at least one and “no” means not even one. A personal example from my life when I used contradictories of a general claim was when my best friend and I were growing up and we said, “no boys are allowed in our tree house”. This also is interpreted as “nothing that is a boy is allowed in our tree house”. There are different ways of saying that nothing or no part of a collection suits some condition. There are different ways to determine whether or not information is valid and general claims and their contradictories determine this information.
This was a very well written post describing general claims. I liked very much how you began the discussion by defining the term general claims. This helped out a lot because it allowed me to begin the reading with the much needed knowledge of the main concept. Furthermore, I liked how you even defined the words with importance, "all", "some", and "no" because that provided me with an even clearer understanding of the topic. Finally, the personal example you provided at the end of how you use general claims was a great idea because it allowed me to apply the concept to real life. Great job.
ReplyDeleteHey Lyss! I really like this post about general claims! This explanation was written in a very simple, straight to the point manner that made it extremely effective. I like that you first stated what general claims where then went straight into describing the different parts or main words in general claims. Then after fully defining the idea of general claims you gave an example for one and then showed how it can be interpreted in different ways but they still mean the same thing. The way you wrote this post was very helpful and very well done! It really helped me understand this topic. Great job!
ReplyDeleteFirst off, I loved your example of contradictories you used in a general claim. It was simple and something many people could relate or find a connection to. Your examples made me think of situations in life where I come across signs like: “No dogs allowed,” at parks. Another way that statement can be interpreted is, All dogs are not allowed.” I liked how you first gave an explanation of what “all,” “some,” and “no” meant in regards to general claims and then went into an example. I found that very effective in understanding the concept of general claims and their contradictories here.
