Appeal to Emotion

Appeal to Emotion:

Appeal to Emotion focuses on the premises saying that you do something a certain way or have a certain belief because of the way you feel. Emotions play a significant role on our every day lives and have a lot of effect on the decisions we make.

An example of appeal to emotion is the following:

“Girl Scouts came to the door and I didn’t have any money, so I had to turn them away and they looked like they were about to cry. We should go down to the grocery store where they are selling cookies and buy some.”

This is an appeal to pity and it is implausible.

Another example of appeal to emotion is the term appeal to fear. Many politicians and advertisers persuade people for their campaigns. Appeal to spite focuses on revenge and people with bad or wrong morals use this type of appeal.

Appeal to spite strikes me the most because it refers to certain cultures and how people preserves "ones honor" and how they reject people who try and get even with one another.

  1. I really like your example of the Girl Scout cookies and how when children come to the door selling things you always feel bad for saying know. This reminds me of when in school they would have us sell candy to raise money and they would make us dress in uniform and say “please it’s so we can have better teachers” so they would be more willing to donate. This even though it is not a good way to argue, it is very effective in advertising because when you see abused animals or starving children you are more likely to pay attention.

  2. Lys! Great post! I like how you first gave the definition of appealing to emotion so we could see the basis of what it is. And then instead of just listing off the types of appeal to emotion, you just jumped right in to giving an example. Not only was it an appeal to emotion but it was an example of appeal to pity. I really like how transitioned so easily from one to the other. Then I liked how you followed up explaining appeal to pity to introducing us to and briefly explaining to us what each of the other types are. All in all I thought this was a very well done post! Good job!

  3. This was a great post because you provided a very descriptive definition of appealing to emotion. That helped out a lot because it provided me with the general background knowledge I needed to understand the rest of your post. I also liked how you gave an example rather than simply listing the types of appeal to emotion. Moreover, when you finally discussed each separate type of appeal to emotion, you transitioned nicely between each one. Appeal to emotion is a very affective way to advertise something and you did very well at portraying how it can be used. Overall, this was an excellently written post which described each portion of the reading very well.

  4. Very well done on describing appeal to emotion. I like how you explained that these emotions play a great role in our everyday lives. I never really thought about it like that before. Your example about girl scouts is great! It is definitely a good example on appeal to pity, because little kids facial expressions can make a big influence on our emotions. Also, the way you described appeal to spite is a way that I have not thought about as well. I never thought of appeal to spite as how people look at one another's cultures. It's also important to remember that you may also not want to believe or do things just because you dont like someone or something. Great job!
